Implementation Plan

In general, various field observations of HiWATER will be lasted from 2012 to 2015. Within this period, intensive observations will be orderly performed in each of the three KEAs, and all superstations in the Heihe River Basin will operate continually. The HiWATER field campaign will kick off in May 2012. To ensure proper allocation of resources, thematic experiments will be conducted in sequence; detailed milestones of the IOP and POP are described as follows:

(1) April to October, 2012. Intensive observations in the middle stream areas.
 ●       April to May. Comparison and calibration of various instruments. To establish the observation matrix for ET composed by EC system, AMS and LAS. To deploy WSN.
 ●       May 15-20. Start to carry out various observations.
 ●       The second half of May to the first half of July. Airborne mission execution.
 ●        June to September. To carry out the multi-scale observation experiment on evapotranspiration.
 ●        April to September. To conduct thematic and validation experiments.
 ●        October. To close the experiments conducted in the middle stream areas and draft report.

(2) September 2012 to October 2013. Intensive observations in the remote sensing hydrology experiment for cold region.
  ●        Summer 2012. Airborne missions execution, and to carry out ground measurements towards soil moisture.
  ●        September, 2012. To reconstruct the A’rou superstation, to deploy AMSs and WSN in the study areas in the upstream zones.
  ●        October, 2012. Start to carry out various observations.
  ●        October 2012 to October 2013. Ground intensive measurements.
  ●        December 2012 to March 2013. To carry out aerial remote sensing dependent on unmanned aircraft.

(3) May to October, 2013. Intensive observations in the remote sensing experiment to support scale transformation of ecosystem water consumption in the downstream oases zones.
  ●       Summer 2012. Airborne missions execution, and to carry out ground measurements towards plant structure parameters.
  ●       October, 2012. To establish the Sidaoqiao superstation.
  ●        March and April, 2013. To install AMSs, WSN and other facilities.
  ●        May to October, 2013. Ground intensive measurements.
  ●        June to August, 2013. To carry out aerial remote sensing dependent on unmanned aircraft.

(4) Persistent observations over the whole river basin from 2013 to 2015. In total, three years of automatic hydrometeorological and eco-hydrological WSN observations will be conducted.
  ●        Within the IOP, all superstations across the river basin will constantly operate.
  ●         In 2013, all facilities over the whole river basin will provide meteorological and hydrological continuous observations.
  ●        Occasionally, airborne missions might be performed based on unmanned aircraft and airship.
  ●        Occasionally, to carry out some remote sensing validation experiment.
